Officers of the Law

In the law enforcement field today, officers are not portrayed well by the media. They are portrayed as racists, and murders', despite all of this men and women still put their lives at risk everyday. They endure hours of stress, headaches, and have to make decisions the normal citizen wouldn't dare make and in mere seconds.

There are many characteristics of an officer of the law, things such as courage, honesty, and attention to detail, but why? Why can't the average person be a Law Enforcement Officer?

An officer must have courage. Courage is not something that can be taught, courage in inside of you, it's putting a strangers life before yours, willing to sacrifice everything for someone who you might not even know their name. To the average citizen this seems crazy, but if you ask any Law Enforcement Officer they will tell you its second nature. They wouldn't think twice about running into a collapsing building to save innocent lives, or step in between a drunken man abusing his family. These are things not many people would do.

However courage comes in another form, the worst case scenario for any officer. Law Enforcement Officers have the authority to kill if deemed necessary. While no officer wants this to ever happen, they must be able to pull the trigger. To save their or someone else's life, whether it be a citizen or another officer. In mere seconds they must make this decision; to take someone's life, to save another.

This may seem like everyday common sense to some people,  however officers look for things that we do not everyday.                                                                           Things such as how someone is talking or acting, if they're jittery or keep looking away, the officer might key in that the subject is lying.    They have to be able to read people.

As well as noticing their surroundings, a speeding ticket could turn into a shootout if the officer doesn't notice the subject has a firearm on the passengers seat.

Finally, is honesty. Every single person should have honestly as a characteristic, however sadly a lot do not. An officer cannot lie to someone, legally and morally. An officer has to tell you the truth, unless the truth interferes with their job, or causes safety to security.   Honest with themselves as well, an officer should know their capabilities and what they can and cannot do. They have to know the difference between right and wrong.

Officers must maintain a higher demeanor than the average person because they are looked up to, they are held to a high standard. They all have very stressful and dangerous jobs, however they are expected to do so much more, The career is not for everybody, but the job must be filled.
